Shhhh, don’t tell anybody, but sneakerheads are getting away with highway robbery every time they cop a pair of the Nike PG 1. Paul George’s signature shoe debut has welcomed with open arms in the sneaker community from both the hardcore and casual set. And the timing couldn’t be better for the category as it has been a struggle as of late to find that next big thing.
Plenty of people still buy signature shoe basketball shoes to be sure. Walk around any mall and go to any school or park and you’ll find lots of pairs of the latest Kobes, LeBrons, KDs, Lillard, and Currys. But what you probably don’t realize is that most of those kicks were bought on the day that they dropped, but rather when they hit clearance racks or outlet stores. Why pay full price for something like the Nike Kobe 11 Master Of Innovation at launch when you can buy it right now for $99? The Under Armour Curry 3 just hasn’t been the runaway success that Steph’s first two signatures were so finding the once hard-to-cop Dub Nations are as easy as a step back three-pointer (by Steph, you probably still suck at shooting). Even something that came with a lot of pre-release hype like the Nike LeBron 14 BHM is still available now. The Nike Kyrie 3 and adidas Harden Vol. 1 have been exciting the base to be sure, but it’s still nowhere near the madness of 2010 to 2012 levels. Enter the Nike PG 1…

Like the Kyrie 3, what the PG 1 lacks in bells and whistles and gimmicks is quickly alleviated by it’s versatility and price. For example, try wearing a pair of KD 9s or LeBron 14s outside of the basketball court. In this day and age when the shoes have to compliment the rest of the outfit in a way that has never been more important, it’s a lot easier to rock the PG 1 Shining with some nice jeans or joggers than the Kobe AD. The Nike PG 1 Ferocity continues that trend with a solid navy blue and white colorway with hints of Pacers yellow for those who are fans of the franchise (like the other Juan).
Things are looking bright for the PG 1. The Shining colorway is sold out and the Ferocity might soon be gone as the weeks go by, so yeah, it’s not Nike Zoom KD 4 levels of crazy where even generic team bank drops were selling out, but that era was such a unique confluence of so many circumstances that it’ll be hard to replicate that place in history again. What the PG 1 can be in this new age though, is the people’s signature shoe. At $110, you’re looking at impulse buy territory for even the casual fan that might not be too familiar with George but are looking for a release that’s new (not in clearance), fresh (PG 1 is as fresh as it gets), and signature (the name attached can still matter). For what the Nike PG 1 can be for Nike, a potential savior that reinvigorates their whole basketball lineup, you get a lot for that $110. Let’s just hope PG isn’t getting on a mic anytime soon and declaring that his shoe should cost more. Everybody likes it just the way it is right now.
